Without a doubt, using a good quality urine is a critical part of any successful predator trap line, especially coyotes. Few attractors stir a canine’s curiosity like urine. It is the nature of a canine’s daily routine to mark their territory with urine. Therefore, a trapper needs to take advantage of this natural habit and use it at a variety of sets. Not just post sets! Furthermore, it should not be used merely just to cover up the trapper’s own scent. Urine as a stand alone attractor is very effective. But, when used with a good gland lure, food lure or bait it can be a deadly combination. I obtain my fox & coyote urine from a private upper Midwest fur farm where the animals receive daily professional care in a controlled environment. The animals are fed a steady meat diet of largely muskrat and beaver throughout the year. After collection the urine is run through a filtering system to remove most of the solid particles, resulting in a clean super quality product. The urine is then preserved and fortified with Sodium Benzoate to stabilize it’s freshness before it is placed into containers. To keep your urine fresh store in a cool dark place. Do not expose any urine to light. Temperature is less of a factor in de-stabilizing urine than light. Over time the urine will darken some, but not turn black or sour. Dakota Prairie urine is the closest thing to urine taken fresh from the bladder of a fox or coyote. A good quality urine puts the finishing touch on many good coyote sets. Also, instead of using a lure to fresh up a set, use urine. While fox urine is a universal urine choice of many trappers targeting coyotes, all canines do display a high degree of interest in the smells of other fox and coyote. When a fox or coyote smells the scent of a competing animal, its compelled to investigate. Here again the territorial instinct of canines displays itself out. BEAVER TAIL OIL Is a dark colored thick viscous oil derived from chopped and then sun rendered beaver tails. It has an evenly pronounced aroma with a consistency of about 80 motor oil. BTO is a great curiosity ingredient in lure and bait formulations, or it can be used in a dirt hole set by itself. It is a good addition to any canine set.
